Weekend Discussion – February 26, 2022

Happy Saturday! It’s almost the end of Black History Month and a huge week of games. Let’s dive into the discussion of the weekend!

black voices, Game developers and content creators also need your support for the remaining 11 months.

Black history has always been world history and I believe it is always important to look back while looking forward. Jerry Lawson had a big impact on games and helped show what was possible with engineering in an ever-changing space in the world of technology. As we mentioned in the original Hall of Fame induction commentary, “Lawson led the development of the Fairchild Channel F, a game console that ran on interchangeable game cartridges, making him a pioneer among pioneers of video game software and hardware. »

Jerry Lawson is a member of the Shacknews Hall of Fame

Since we have just spoken briefly of the past, I also want to mention a man of the present. We recently spoke with Dinga Bakaba, Creative Director of Deathloop, which was Shacknews 2021 Game of the Year. I really enjoyed hearing how the team approached the development of Colt and Juliana as fully realized characters and, artistically, made sure to keep their Afro-centric characteristics on full display.

You can read why Deathloop won Game of the Year here.

I also want to take a moment to speak out as a content creator on Twitch, YouTube, and other platforms to say that black history happens all year round. Over the years I have been approached by companies to be the face of BHM activations while being completely ignored the other 11 months of the year. There are changes that need to happen in the gaming space, but there are also a lot of opportunities thanks to the people working. Will we see game studios and management companies with more black faces behind the scenes?

Luckily, some of that is already happening with some amazing bands that are so worth it. I want to highlight what Xmiramira and his team have done with The Noir Network, a group of Black female content creators across the gaming space who have absolutely killed it with their content, streaming and even competitive esports games .

Mira also brings up some of the things that I talked about with respect to some of these PR and brand activations.

Mira hosts Twitter Spaces every week to help people trying to get better at the content creation space. You can watch a recording of today’s session on supporting your peers below.

Take the time to check out some of the amazing creators on this list and show your support!

In case you missed it…

We had a lot of awesome stuff on display this week, including live content from the early days of Elden Ring from our staff Sam Chandler and TJ Denzer.

You can also check out the full Elden Ring video review below. I’m loving the game so far and it’s shaping up to be one of the top contenders for Game of the Year and potentially an all-time great.

We also reviewed the SteamDeck and felt that Valve definitely had some work to do to make this device more user-friendly. Check out Asif discussing the new portable system in yesterday’s episode of The Dump.
