UMaine goes viral with lobster video

ORONO – The University of Maine draws attention to the conversation about the blue economy and its goal of providing global maritime leadership with mild motivation to go viral with a YouTube video promoting the safe handling and consumption of lobster. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension video has helped more than 1.8 million viewers safely boil, steam, grill and enjoy Maine’s most famous seafood.

Posted nearly ten years ago, the “Cook & Eat Lobster” video youtube.com/watch?v=KYLnDEODDvY is among the 10 most viewed videos on UMaine’s YouTube channel this month. Its 12,854 views in the past 30 days surpass other UMaine Extension fan favorites, such as “Getting Strawberry Plants Ready for Winter” on youtube.com/watch?v=cjK1kZ1FmrE, “How Do I Prune Raspberries” at youtube.com/watch? v = pOzo4s9Z9jE, and “Tick Removal” at youtube.com/watch?v=XZ14TP7FSQk.

UMaine is posting a new video youtube.com/watch?v=bUBFwumJO9c which features Jason Bolton, UMaine extension professor and food safety specialist, one of the original stars of the “Lobster Cooking and Eating” video. The vintage VHS-style video offers viewers a chance to win free Maine Lobster for joining the conversation on the blue economy and helping UMaine grow their video to over 2 million views.

“Line weight has never been a goal of mine, but as an educator I am happy to help people prepare and enjoy lobster safely,” Bolton said, according to a statement from UMaine press. “The Blue Economy is a hot topic of conversation at UMaine and going viral, in a good way, is a great way to get people involved. “

UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy last week hosted more than 100 blue economy researchers, decision-makers and stakeholders in a virtual discussion, hosted by the UMaine MARINE initiative. The event highlighted the impact of UMaine’s 110 sea-focused researchers, contributions to more than $ 75 million in global research projects and the 32% growth in enrollment at UMaine School of Marine Sciences.
