Spotify Technology SA: From Eurovision Song Contest To Spotify’s 50 Most Viral Global Playlist, Italian Rock Band Mneskin Performs On
The four members of Moneskinare no strangers to music competitions. From their fist, a local Roman competition in 2015, in second place of the Italian X factor, to their victory in May 2021 on the world stage at Eurovision, the Italian rock band spread its sound and gained followers in the country and around the world.
Since Eurovision, the group broke world records to become the number one artist in countries like Italy, Belgium, Greece, Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden and others, and in Top of Spotify’s Top Viral 50 chart. The group quickly collected 500 million streams on Spotify, including 250 million on just two tracks. These two songs are now in Spotify’s global top 10, and Måneskin has become the most listened to Italian artist in the world.
Finally, the song of the group ‘I WANT TO BE YOUR SLAVE‘entered the UK charts last week, scoring two simultaneous Top 10 singles. The band even claimed a spot in New York on Spotify’s billboard to Times Square, shifting their guitar riffs and lyrics – with songs in English and Italian – across the ocean. (And in case you were wondering, ‘måneskin’ means ‘moonlight’ in Danish, chosen by band member Victoria De Angelis in honor of her Danish heritage.)
We asked the group to reflect on all of the group’s accomplishments over the past few months, how they have used Spotify to keep up to date with their new fans and the rest.
A few months ago, you were crowned laureates of the Eurovision Singing contest. Tell us about the experience – from the Sanremo Music Festival to the final Eurovision performance.
After our victory at the Sanremo Festival, we were delighted to know that we had the opportunity to participate in Eurovision, which is a massive musical event. It was an amazing experience because we met so many different people from so many different countries. It was so much fun and it was also a healthy environment, we didn’t feel the competition. When we got the chance to perform on stage and play in the final, it was a huge experience for us and it was amazing to finally be able to perform in front of a real audience after two years.
Have you noticed any change in your audience since then? Where does your music resonate outside of Italy?
We’re seeing crazy results and great feedback from so many countries outside of Italy – we didn’t expect all of this! We’ve now been on a promotional tour all over Europe, meeting so many fans in every country we go to, and we’re really happy about it.
How do you use Spotify tools to track and engage with this growing audience?
We constantly check Spotify for Artists and Spotify rankings to monitor our results. We notice that our songs are on so many different country charts on Spotify. At the moment, we are the 78th most listened to artists in the world on the platform!
At Eurovision you said ‘Rock never dies!’ What opportunities for the genre?
We hope we can prove that rock music doesn’t have to stay underground and can be enjoyed by everyone. If a song is good, it will speak louder than its genre. We hope that, from now on, the music industry will be more open on this subject to allow more artists to express themselves with rock music. For us, that’s not the kind of music you make: if you believe in what you do, people will believe it too.
What’s the next step for you as a group?
We do not know what will follow! We try to live step by step, from day to day, naturally. We will continue to write and work on new music and see where it takes us!
