Sonic the Hedgehog 3: the cast wants a musical number next time

Each time a new sonic the hedgehog project is announced, fans are clamoring to discuss what it should be influenced by. Classic Genesis games for their iconic look? The Dreamcast Sonic Adventure series for history? Sonic’s various appearances in the animation are also alluded to, whether it’s the goofy slapstick of The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehogthe cult classic sonic the hedgehog (aka SatAM), the sonic x animated, and more.

A series that the cast of the live-action Sonic movies want to be inspired by more than any other is Supersonic Detonation. Airing from 2014 to 2017 on Cartoon Network and Boomerang, the series stands out from other entries in the Sonic franchise by functioning as an action-adventure story send-off with tons of fourth-wall-breaking jokes.

The actor leading the charge at the reference Supersonic Detonation is Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who began voicing Sonic Tails’ sidekick in this series and now voices her in the movies. O’Shaughnessey, who spoke with Den of Geek before sonic the hedgehog 2wants to bring a very specific element of the series to the big screen, the group “Dude-itude”.

In the Supersonic Detonation series, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are a cross between a rock and boy band and perform several songs of their own creation. O’Shaughnessey provided the voice of Tails for the band and is excited to star alongside Sonic actor Ben Schwartz.

“He is in [Apple TV+’s] the after party and it has these big musical numbers,” says O’Shaughnessey. “I was like, ‘Ben! I didn’t know you could sing. Tails and Sonic need a song!”

Jeff Fowler, director of both sonic the hedgehog live-action movies, says Schwartz “looks for any opportunity to get into songwriting at any time of anything. I will have to write this. Crossed fingers!”

O’Shaughnessey begs Fowler, joking, “We need a big musical number!”

Considering we now have Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the Sonic movie franchise, a Dude-itude cameo isn’t out of the question. We have no idea what the plot reason is for the three to form a group, but anything is possible! Sonic rocked that air guitar in the first movie, and if Tails can make his own gadgets to fight evil, surely he can build a sound system. And come on, why wouldn’t Idris Elba want to sing as Knuckles? Hell, maybe he could perform Knuckles’ famous rap from Sonic Adventure within the group. We need it! Please Paramount, the music sales alone would justify it. What if Jim Carrey came back, imagine yourself leading “Cuban Pete” in The Mask
