Softball leaves rockets and splits on first day of Jane B. Moore Memorial

AUBURN — The Chattanooga Mocs softball team shared day one of the Jane B. Moore Memorial in Auburn on Friday afternoon, capping off with a 5-4 win over Toledo.

The Mocs opened the tournament with a 9-1 loss to NC A&T.

UTC goes 8-8 this season, while NC A&T improved to 9-6 and Toledo fell to 3-8.

The Mocs are back in action tomorrow morning as the team takes on the same two teams starting at 11 a.m. EST.

GAME 1 RECAP
NC A&T came first on the board with a goal-laden march down first. The Mocs had a runner on board on a pass in each of the first two innings, but failed to get through.

Gracey Kruse ended up on second base of third after a walk and a wild pitch. She placed third on a Emilie Coltharp single on the field and scored on an error by Aggie to tie the game at one.

In the fourth, with the game tied at one, NC A&T’s Icess Tresvik hit a line over the center field wall to restore the lead to the Aggies. In the fifth, after second batter Aggie hit a pitching error, they charged the bases with two outs. Tresvik hit his second homer of the game, a grand slam to put NC A&T ahead 6-1.

The Aggies tackled three more in the sixth for a 9-1 win in six innings.

Hannah Wood got the start in the circle for the Bleu et Or and allowed four runs, including two earned in 4.1 innings of work. She struck out two, walked three and allowed three hits.

Brooke Parrot came on in relief, allowing five runs, three earned on three-thirds with one strikeout and one walk in 1.1 innings.

Olivia Lipari and Coltharp recorded both hits for UTC.

Notable:

  • Chattanooga’s five walks are a season high for the team. Acelynn Sellers’ two walks marked a career-best freshman year.
  • The two hits are the fewest for the team since opening weekend Feb. 11.

GAME 2 RECAP

Chattanooga came first on the board with a Kaili Phillips sacrificed fly, score Olivia Lipari.

After a scoreless second inning, Toledo took a 2-1 lead with an RBI double and a single. The Rockets extended their lead to fifth with a sack fly.
In the bottom of the fifth, Chattanooga cut their deficit in half with a Coltharp groundout, scoring Kruse. Toledo regained their 2-point lead on a throwing error.

The Mocs fought back with two runs in the sixth. The scoring started with a solo shot from Phillips down the center to cut Toledo’s lead to one. Two batters later, Sellers hit his first career double to score Bailey Myers of the second, tying the game at four.

In the seventh, after Coltharp hit an error with one out, Adison Keylon went through picking a defenseman and advanced to second on a throwing error. The Mocs put two more runners in with two walks to get the Sellers up.

Sellers delivered a simple 1-1 down the left side to secure the Mocs victory.

Sellers went 2 for 3 with two RBIs in the contest. Phillips had a 2-for-2 day with a walk and two RBIs.

Coltharp, Liz Rodebaugh and Reagan armor scored the other hits for the Bleu et Or.

Izzy’s Alley pitched his first full game and earned his first career win by allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits and two strikeouts.

Toledo’s Durieux went five innings and allowed four runs on five hits with one strikeout. Ellie Price came on as relief and recouped the loss, allowing one run on two hits with two walks.

Notable:

  • This victory is the second victory without appeal of the Mocs this season.
  • This is the third one-point game of the season for UTC. The Mocs are 2-1 in those contests. This is the first time this season that the Mocs have won after being beaten.
  • Coltharp has recorded an RBI in seven of the last 11 games.
  • Armor extended his team-leading hitting streak to five straight games.
  • Phillips’ two RBIs take him to two RBI games this season and 15 in his career.

Series history:
The game against NC A&T was the first ever between the two teams. UTC leads the all-time series against Toledo 5-0.
