Not Hima Das, Sanket Sargar won India’s first medal at CWG 2022
Indian Twitter is on fire and celebrating with congratulatory tweets for Hima Das as she ‘won the first CWG 2022 gold medal’ for India. A viral video showing a feisty Hima Das racing for gold with a certain Romanian getting the silver has been shared by prominent names like Virender Sehwag.
The above mentioned video has over 10,000 likes and 2,000 retweets. From verified accounts to government officials, everyone is tweeting this video.
The only problem here is that Hima Das’ event didn’t even start at Birmingham CWG 2022. And ironically, weightlifter Sanket Sargar was actually winning India’s first medal at CWG 2022.

What is this video then?
The video which is widely shared and circulated on Twitter is the 2018 junior championship video when Hima Das became the first Indian to win a gold medal in any international track event. Hima clocked 51.46 seconds in the 400m final, creating history.
The athlete from Assam will represent India in the women’s 4*100m relay at the 2022 Commonwealth Games on August 3, 2022.
Even Virender Sehwag shared the video and later deleted it.
It is a sad situation that even in 2022 awareness of Olympic sports is lacking and people are not even researching such historical moments.
As Hima’s video ignited social media, India secured its first medalist at CWG 2022, with weightlifter Sanket Sargar winning the 55kg silver medal despite injury.
The 2022 CWG athletics competitions are scheduled to take place at Alexander Stadium from August 2. Hima is expected to compete in the 200m race, which will take place on August 4. The semi-finals and the final of the event will take place on August 5 and 6 respectively.
